Advertising in Yellow pages or the free listing on yell.com paid big dividends before the rise of the internet and other advertising giants like Google or the other search engines. This was because the first port of call for people or businesses when they were looking for a service was physical business directories such as the telephone directory, yellow pages or thompsons local.
Nowadays this is less effective as most people will go to Google or another search engine to search for a service or product. You can visibly see this trend in the size of the physical yellow pages or thompson’s local directory that is delivered to your door. How they have shrunk!! The telephone directory has been replaced online by Google my business, and yellow pages have been replaced by Google AdWords or other forms of search engine advertising.
According to CRM Associates, the average Yellow Pages ad brings in more than 80 calls annually for about $800, or a cost of $10 per call. Compare this to cost per click advertising with a search engine, and the cost falls to $0.50 per call! This does depend on what keyword you are bidding on, as they are not all the same price. However they are more cost effective than the normal physical directory (i.e. yellow pages) advertising!
THE “NEW” CPC MODEL OF ADVERTISING
The reason for this large difference is that you will only pay when your ad is clicked on. It is a newer advertising model, whereas with newspaper or physical directory / yellow pages advertising, you are paying for the amount of space and the length of time your advert runs. This CPC (cost per click) model is better for business, as people only click or call if they are interested. The amount of space your ad takes up, and the amount of time it shows for are taken out of the equation and do not contribute to cost. With Paid search they will also most often be actively looking and searching for your service or product, which is why traffic can be so targeted.
The whole reason Google and other search engines exist, is because they provide information of interest (i.e. the right information) to the person who is typing in the search. Similarly, you only get charged if your information is of interest to the searcher who then clicks on your ad to prove interest.
Advertising on Yell.com is slightly different, as this is the online version of yellow pages. Yell is actually more like a digital marketing agency, and do offer managed pay per click advertising through Google. However like most agencies they take a percentage of the ad spend on Google as a management fee each month.
We are offering fixed fees but with the same level of professional management! We think this is a better and more cost effective solution for businesses, especially as in some business areas the margins are narrow, making some kinds of PPC management nonviable. For example, if you spent £10,000 a normal agency (including yell) would charge £1000 - £4000 on top of that! For a limited time we would charge just £197 fixed for a year.
